[MacOS version] How to set a password on a USB memory or external HDD!

In the case of MacOS, the method of applying a password to a USB memory or external HDD as standard is installed as standard.

First, insert the external SSD

First, insert the external SSD and the external device will be recognized.

Open Disk Utility.

Can’t press “Create Partition”?

“Create partition” was a thin button and could not be pressed.

I tried erasing the partition in another format … it didn’t work.

This is a display issue and can be resolved by switching from Show Volume Only to Show All Devices.

You can now press “Create Partition”.

Select Mac OS Extensions (Journaling, Encryption).

A screen for setting a password will appear, so set a password!

You have now set your password! Changed to “Mac OS Extensions (Journaling, Encryption)”. Then press “Apply” to complete.

When mounting, the password input screen is now displayed.

Decryption (password)

If you select the unencrypted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” partition from “Erase”, you will not be asked for the password next time.

Please note that all the data inside will be erased!

Cannot be used on Windows

If you erase and create a partition with this procedure, you will not be able to use it on a Windows PC.

When you insert it, you will hear a sound like “Tantaratan ♪” when you insert it into your PC, but no matter how long you wait, the external SSD will not be displayed at all.

In “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” … Windows doesn’t seem to recognize it. * If you insert or remove it, “Tantaratan ♪” will sound.

What to do when you want to use it on Windows

① Erase again and change the format type

If it is MS-DOS (FAT), it will be recognized by Windows, so change it here.

② Divide the partition

Please note that all data will be deleted.

If you create a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” partition with 60GB, you can choose what to do with the other half of the partition.

If you create a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” partition with 60GB, you can choose what to do with the other half of the partition.

If you create it with, half of 60GB can be used on Windows (+ Mac).

The partition has been split!

Now, one of the partitions “MS-DOS (FAT)” can be used on a Windows PC.
